The Carthage College women’s soccer team (10-1, 2-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) pounded non-conference opponent Finlandia University (2-13), 10-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 7 in a driving rain storm at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage took an 8-0 lead in the first period behind two goal by Jackie Peterson, her 10th and 11th of the year, and single goals by Kelly Baumgartner, Karen Schwoebel, Kelsey Harrington, Jen Carlson, Colby Lehew and Sarah Caselli. The Lady Reds tacked on two more goals in the second period, thanks to Kasie Jabeck and Katie Carskie. Carthage plays host to non-conference opponent Concordia University (Wis.) on Sunday, Oct. 11 in a 3 p.m. contest, also at Art Keller Field.
The Carthage College football team (3-1, 1-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), tied for 37th place in the Oct. 4 "D3football.com" poll, opened its CCIW-schedule on Saturday, Oct. 4 with a 26-21 win over No. 38 Illinois Wesleyan University (3-1, 0-1 CCIW) at Illinois Wesleyan Stadium at Wilder Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Red Men scored early and scored late to secure the victory, their third in six years at Illinois Wesleyan Stadium.
Carthage collected 444 total offensive yards, 118 rushing and 326 yards passing, while Illinois Wesleyan totaled 265 yards, 53 on the ground and 212 in the air. Evan Jones completed 27-of-37 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jake Smith caught 13 passes for 91 yards while rushing for 70 yards on 20 carries. Nick Merchut caught five passes for 79 yards. Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (3-1, 0-1 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 11 in the Red Men’s Homecoming game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis., beginning at 1 p.m.

Swoboda was named to the all-tournament team at the Oct. 3-4 Augustana College (Ill.) Tournament. She hit .330 at the event and averaged 3.40 kills per game and 0.73 blocks. Swoboda had 13 kills in a 3-1 win over Coe College, eight kills and a .438 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep over Simpson College, eight kills and a .333 attack percentage in a 3-0 win over Wisconsin-Platteville and a career-high 22 kills with a .362 attack percentage in a 3-2 win over Wartburg College. Earlier in the week, she had 16 kills and hit .286 in a 3-1 victory over CCIW-opponent Augustana (Ill.).
The Carthage College women’s volleyball team (18-1, 3-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked eighth in the Oct. 7 American Volleyball Coaches Association/CBS College Sports Network NCAA Division III poll, went 4-0 at the Friday-Saturday, Oct 3-4 Augustana College (Ill.) Tournament at the Carver Physical Education Center in Rock Island, Ill. On Saturday, Oct. 4, Carthage swept Wisconsin-Platteville (12-10), 3-0, before outlasting Wartburg College (6-14) by a 3-2 margin. The Lady Reds’ winning set scores over Wisconsin-Platteville were 25-12, 25-19 and 25-18, and their winning scores over Wartburg were 23-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19 and 15-6.
Carthage won both of its matches on Friday, Oct. 3, defeating Coe College (3-15), 3-1, before sweeping Simpson College (11-7), 3-0. The Lady Reds’ winning game scores over the Kohawks were 25-15, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-14, and their winning scores over the Storm were 25-22, 25-15 and 25-16 Rachel Swoboda and Katie Lundgren were both named to the all-tournament team. Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent North Park University (15-7, 0-4 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 11 in a Noon Homecoming match at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis.

Illinois Wesleyan’s Lindsey Haines took medalist honors with a 76-83-159, winning s sudden-death playoff over Brittany Bronson from Wheaton (Ill.), who was second with a 77-82-159. Carthage’s Sarah Joers earned All-CCIW honors with an eighth-place finish and a score of 92-78-170. Amy Binstein tied for 14th at 84-90-174, Heidi Hoffman tied for 29th at 95-89-184, Brooke Mix tied for 33rd at 92-95-187, Katie Ramirez finished 35th at 90-98-188, and Aubrie Morano tied for 38th place with a 104-95-199.
