Carthage Finishes Second at Oct. 10-11 CIW Women's Tennis Championship

The Carthage College women’s tennis team (6-3, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) finished second at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 10-11 CCIW Women’s Tennis Championship at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.  Wheaton College (Ill.) won its 14th league championship and fourth in a row with 78 points, followed by Carthage second at 57, Illinois Wesleyan University third at 27 points, North Central College fourth at 24, Augustana College (Ill.) fifth at 22, Elmhurst College sixth at 13 and Millikin University seventh with three points. 
 
Carthage’s Beth Kaufman (11-5) lost the number-one singles championship to Jordan Hook from Wheaton (Ill.), Hook winning, 6-1, 6-0.  Kaufman advanced to the title match by defeating Illinois Wesleyan’s Allison Heim, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals.  The Thunder’s Elizabeth Worsowicz defeated Gina Klein (6-4) in the number-two singles championship, 6-3, 6-0.  Klein advanced to the championship with a win over North Central’s Alicia DeGrado, 6-0, 7-6(7-4) in the semifinals.  Taylor Gustafson (9-5) won the number-three singles championship with a win over Wheaton’ Brittney Dunn, 7-5, 6-3.  Gustafson reached the title match with a semifinal win over Illinois Wesleyan’s Kristin Piotrowski, 6-2, 6-1.  Katie Hornick (7-6) lost the number-four singles title to Wheaton’s Kayli Edward, Edwards winning, 6-1, 6-2.  Hornick advanced to the championship with a semifinal victory over North Central’s Missy Lewis, 6-0, 6-0.  The Thunder’s Jill Casserly defeated Emily Murphy (7-5) for the number-five singles championship, 6-1, 6-4.  Murphy advanced after defeating Christine Heyd from North Central, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0, in the semifinals.  Wheaton’s Lindsey Hallett defeated Jennifer Immen (8-6) in the number-six singles championship, 6-2, 6-3.  Immen advanced  with a decision over Illinois Wesleyan’s Cate Hunter, 7-5, 6-3. 

In doubles, Carthage’s number-one team of Klein and Gustafson (8-6) lost to Wheaton’s Jordan Hook and Elizabeth Worsowicz, 6-4, 6-2.  Klein and Gustafson advanced with a semifinal win over Illinois Wesleyan’s Allison Heim and Cassie Devore, 6-4, 7-6, 8-6.  Carthage’s number-two doubles team of Beth Kaufman and Emily Murphy (8-5) lost the title match to Wheaton’s Brittney Dunn and Kayli Edwards, Wheaton winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.  Kaufman and Murphy defeated North Central’s Christine Heyd and Alicia De Grado, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals.  The Lady Reds; number-three doubles tandem of Katie Hornick and Jennifer Immen (6-5) lost to Wheaton’s Jill Casserly and Lindsey Hallett, 6-2, 6-0, in the title match.  Hornick and Immen defeated North Central’s Melissa Lewis and Cristina Madrigal, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.
