Johnie Butler, Carthage’s first recipient of the Fred Young ‘Most Outstanding Basketball Player” Award, set a school record in 1971 with a 26.5 points-per-game average. His 636 points that season was later eclipsed by Barry Bonnet's 648 in 1977. Butler’s 17 field goals against Millikin on Jan. 30, 1971, remains a Carthage game record. Butler was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.

John Thiel (Carthage-deceased, ‘51) was the first Red Men post-World War II basketball star and the only Carthaginian to play professional basketball. Thiel led the Red Men with 33 points in the 1948-49 season opener but left the team to join the National Basketball Association Milwaukee (now Atlanta) Hawks. He played one season for the Hawks and later coached boys basketball at Galesburg (Ill.) High School, where he compiled a 398-90 record from 1955-1973, losing only 11 home games in that period. Thiel was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Bill Burr was a teammate of Thiel's on Carthage's 1947-48 squad and was named team MVP in his only year at Carthage. Burr also went on to coach high school basketball at Burlington City High School in New Jersey, where he compiled a 304-98 record between 1954 and 1971. His Burlington teams won 12 league titles, and his 1966 squad went 24-0 and won a New Jersey Group II championship.
Jerry Parks, one of two Carthage players to be named first-team All-CCIW three times. He was first team in 1965, 1966 and 1967. His 1,653 points are sixth on the Carthage career-scoring list. Parks was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
Jason Wiertel was named National Association of Basketball Coaches second-team All-American in 2000, NABC first-team All-Midwest Region in 2000, 2001 and 2002, "D3hoops.com" All-American in 2000 (third team), 2001 (second team) and 2002 (first team), Lutheran Brotherhood All-American in 2000 and 2001, the CCIW/Fred Young Most Outstanding Player in 2000 (a co-winner) and first-team All-CCIW four-straight years from 1999 to 2002. He is one of only five players to be named first-team All-CCIW four-straight years, two of whom are from Carthage The other four are teammate Rob Garnes (2000-03), Wheaton College's Bud Schaeffer (1947-50), North Central College's Bill Warden (1952-55) and Millikin University's Jesse Price (1966-69). In a footnote, Wheaton's Mel Peterson was named first-team All-CCIW three-straight times from 1957 to 1959 and would have been named All-CCIW again in 1960, except that Wheaton left the league that year and returned in 1967. Wiertel was also named GTE/CoSIDA academic all-district in 2000 and CCIW all-academic in 2000 and 2002.
Rob Garnes is one of only five players to be named first-team All-CCIW four-straight years (2000-03). He was also named “D3hoops.com”second-team All-Midwest Region in 2002 and third-team all-region in 2003
Antoine McDaniel was named National Association of Basketball Coaches first-team All-American in 2002, NABC first-team All-Midwest Region in both 2002 and 2003, “D3hoops.com” second-team All-American in 2002, “D3hoops.com” first-team All-Midwest Region in 2002 and second-team all-region in 2003. He was named All-CCIW four times, second team in 2000, third team in 2001 and first team in both 2002 and 2003. McDaniel was also honored with the CCIW’s Fred Young Most Outstanding Player Award in 2002.
