Women’s Water Polo Wins April 17-18 Midwest Regional Tournament;
Lady Reds 8-4 Winner over Macalester in Tournament Championship
2009 Midwest Regional Tournament: The Carthage College women’s water polo team (10-10) won the Friday-Saturday, April 17-18 Midwest Regional Tournament at Macalester College’s Leonard Natatorium/Riley Poolin St. Paul, Minn. Carthage won the title with an 8-7 victory over Macalester College (16-11) on Saturday, April 18. The Lady Reds advanced to the championship match by defeating Wheaton College (Ill.), 11-6, in the semifinals on April 18. Macalester defeated over Colorado College, 10-3, in the other semifinal contest. Wheaton (Ill., 8-15) defeated Colorado College, 8-4, in the April 18 consolation contest. Carthage went 1-2 in pool play on Friday, April 17. The Lady Reds lost to Wheaton (Ill.), 8-4; defeated Colorado College, 12-7; and lost to Macalester, 8-4. The Lady Reds’ Patti Blatter was named to the all-regional team.
Carthage Fourth at April 2-4 Home Tournament: Carthage went 3-3 to finish fourth at the Thursday-Saturday, April 2-4 Midwest Tournament at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. On Friday, April 3, Carthage lost to Washington & Jefferson College, 5-2; defeated Penn State University-Behrend, 14-3; and won over Colorado College by a 17-3 margin. On Saturday, April 4, the Lady Reds lost to Macalester College, 8-4; lost to Grove City College, 8-7; and defeated Wheaton College (Ill.) by a 10-7 margin. Grove City won the tournament with a 5-0 record, followed by Washington & Jefferson second at 4-1, Macalester third at 4-2, Carthage fourth at 3-2, Wheaton (Ill.) fifth at 2-4, Colorado College sixth at 1-5 and Penn State-Behrend seventh with an 0-4 mark.
Tom Carroll Named Head Coach: Carthage College athletic director Robert Bonn named Tom Carroll head coach on Aug. 5, replacing Luke Payette, who resigned in June. Carroll, a native of Elmhurst, Ill., was the head water polo coach for the Blue Devil Swim Club in Gurnee, Ill., from 2006 to 2007, as well as a part-time assistant swimming coach at Carthage for the 2006-07 season. He has also coached high school swimming in Germantown, Wis., and Appleton, Wis., along with stints at the Nike Swim Camps and the Germantown Seahawks club swimming team. Carroll attended Lawrence University, where he won 2002 and 2003 Midwest Conference titles in the 1,650 freestyle, along with a 2003 title in the 500 freestyle. He graduated from Lawrence in 2003 with a bachelor’s in history.
2008 Division III Collegiate Championship: Carthage (24-10) finished sixth at the 2008 Collegiate Division III Water Polo Tournament at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn. Carthage lost to Grove City College, 8-6, in the Sunday, May 4 fifth-place match. The Lady Reds went 2-2 in pool play. On Friday, May 2, Carthage fell to California-Santa Cruz. 13-4, before losing to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College by a 14-7 margin. On Saturday, May 3, the Lady Reds defeated Connecticut College, 8-6, before edging Colorado College, 7-6.
2008 Midwest Regional Tournament: Carthage won the 2008 Midwest Regional Water Polo Tournament with an 8-7 decision over Colorado College in the Saturday, April 19 championship match at Colorado College’s Schlessman Natatorium. Earlier on April 19, Carthage defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 12-3, in the semifinals. On Friday, April 18 in pool play, the Lady Reds defeated Macalester College, 8-6; defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 18-14; and edged Colorado College, 11-10.
