Women’s Water Polo Finishes Sixth at National Collegiate Tournament;

Tom Carroll Named Head Coach

 

Tom Carroll Named Head Coach:  Carthage College athletic director Robert Bonn named Tom Carroll head coach on Aug. 5, replacing Luke Payette, who resigned in June.  Carroll, a native of Elmhurst, Ill., was the head water polo coach for the Blue Devil Swim Club in Gurnee, Ill., from 2006 to 2007, as well as a part-time assistant swimming coach at Carthage for the 2006-07 season.  He has also coached high school swimming in Germantown, Wis., and Appleton, Wis., along with stints at the Nike Swim Camps and the Germantown Seahawks club swimming team.  Carroll attended Lawrence University, where he won 2002 and 2003 Midwest Conference titles in the 1,650 freestyle, along with a 2003 title in the 500 freestyle.  He graduated from Lawrence in 2003 with a bachelor’s in history. 

 

Coach Luke Payette Resigns:  Head coach Luke Payette resigned after the completion of the 2008 season.  Payette concluded three years as the Lady Reds coach (39-41, 3 years) after coaching the Carthage club team in 2005.  Carthage athletic director Robert Bonn is currently conducting national search for a new women’s swimming coach, and that position might also include head water polo coaching duties.

 

Division III Collegiate Championship:  The Carthage College women’s water polo team (24-10) finished sixth at the Friday-Sunday, May 2-4 Collegiate Division III Water Polo Tournament at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn.  Carthage lost to Grove City College, 8-6, in the Sunday, May 4 fifth-place match.  The Lady Reds went 2-2 in pool play.  On Friday, May 2, Carthage fell to California-Santa Cruz. 13-4, before losing to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College by a 14-7 margin.  On Saturday, May 3, the Lady Reds defeated Connecticut College, 8-6, before edging Colorado College, 7-6. 

 

2008 Midwest Regional Tournament:  Carthage won the Friday-Saturday, April 18-19 Midwest Regional Water Polo Tournament with an 8-7 decision over Colorado College in the Saturday, April 19 championship match at Colorado College’s Schlessman Natatorium.  Earlier on April 19, Carthage defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 12-3, in the semifinals.  On Friday, April 18 in pool play, the Lady Reds defeated Macalester College, 8-6; defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 18-14; and edged Colorado College, 11-10.

 

Rose Schiavone Named All-America:  Carthage’s Rose Schiavone (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect, 65 goals) was named Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches honorable mention All-America.

 

Midwest Regional Tournament Notes:  Carthage’s Rose Schiavone (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was named the regional MVP.  Patti Blatter (So., Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling) joined Schiavone on the regional first team, while Kimmy Genian (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) was named honorable mention all-regional…in Carthage’s win over Colorado College in the regional title match, Rose Schiavone scored with 58 seconds reaming to break a 7-7 tie.  Heather Croix (Jr., Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) collected her 11th blocked shot when she stopped an attempt by Kat McIntosh with five seconds on the clock…Genian had a team-leading five goals in the Lady Reds’ 8-6 win over Macalester College on April 18…Schiavone had six goals in the 18-14 decision over Wheaton College (Ill.) in April 18 and four goals against Colorado College, also on April 18…Genian scored four times in the 12-3 win over Wheaton (Ill.) in the semifinals…Schiavone and Jessica Shopiro (Sr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) each had two goals in Carthage’s 8-7 win over Colorado College in the tournament-championship match…as a team, Carthage was ranked 11th nationally in goals per game (10.9) and 21st in goals allowed (8.1) after the regionals.

 

2008 Division III Collegiate Tournament Notes:  In Carthage’s 13-4 loss to UC-Santa Cruz on May 2, the Lady Reds collected single goals from Amanda Croix (Fr., Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), Patti Blatter (So, Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling), Kimmy Genian (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) and Rose Schiavone (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect)…in the team’s 14-7 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, Genian scored three times, Schiavone twice and Jessica Shopiro (Sr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) twice…in the Connecticut College contest, Genian scored three goals, with two apiece from Schiavone and Shopiro.  In the Colorado College match, Genian scored four times, Shopiro twice and Anna Kordek (Fr., Long Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) once.  In the fifth-place match against Grove City, the Lady Reds collected two goals each from Blatter, Michelle Mulhall (So., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and one each from Schiavone and Croix.  Both Genian and Schiavone were named second-team all-tournament.
