Carthage College Athletic Training Education Program

Mission Statement
The Carthage College Athletic Training Program is committed to providing a comprehensive athletic training education program resulting in quality, entry-level athletic trainers. Concurrently, we strive to deliver traditional athletic training and sports medicine services to the student-athletes of Carthage College. The services to be delivered include injury prevention, management of athletic injuries, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. In addition, we will integrate education about athletic injuries so that our student-athletes can be empowered to lead healthy and injury-free lives.
The purposes of the program are focused yet comprehensive. First, we strive to present a safe environment whereas athletic training students obtain practical athletic training experience under the supervision of an approved clinical instructor. Second, we hope to offer easy access to sports medicine services for all our student-athletes. Third, we encourage a philosophy of sport that places a high value on health and wellness. Next, we hope to enable injured student-athletes’ to return to their particular sport as soon as it is medically safe. Finally, we hope to be able to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for Carthage College student-athletes.
The underlying philosophy for the athletic training program is consistent with the mission of Carthage College, which is a commitment to provide a strong foundation in liberal arts for all its students. Furthermore, we expect our athletic trainers and athletic training students to provide services while maintaining the highest standards of quality consistent with the National Athletic Trainers Association Code of Professional Practice and the credentialing statutes of the State of Wisconsin.
What is an Athletic Trainer?
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC’s) are health-care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. ATC’s work under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health-care professionals, athletic administrators, coaches, and parents.
What is Athletic Training?
Athletic Training is a component of sports medicine providing a major link between a sports program and the medical community for the implementation of injury prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation procedures. ATCs focus on six major domains. These include:
- Athletic injury prevention and risk management
- Recognition, evaluation, and assessment of injuries and illnesses
- First aid and emergency care
- Treatment, rehab, and reconditioning
- Health-care organization and administration
- Professional development and responsibility
The Carthage College Athletic Training Education Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) since 2003.
