Field Placements

Hints for Finding Field Placements

  1. Ask around . ask classmates, friends, and professor's to recommend placements for you. It is often the word of mouth that finds us some of the best placements.
  2. Obtain your placement early . be sure all of the necessary forms and paperwork are in order. By finalizing the details early on you will have less pressure and a more relaxed semester because you are not struggling to fit in hours.
  3. Don't be afraid to call an agency . state your name, school and purpose for calling and ask to be connect to the appropriate person. Just simply ask if they have openings for interns and make an appointment to meet with someone. Cold calling can be intimidating, but you never know unless you ask.
  4. Consider taking a placement outside of your main area of interest . you may find you enjoy it, and at the least you are broadening your experience.
  5. Consult our online directory for ideas and contact information

  2. Be assertive . don't be afraid to take on new tasks and challenges. This is an amazing learning experience, so make the most of it.
  3. Relax . take time to enjoy the work that you are doing and realize that everyone is nervous when starting placements.
  4. Network . make it a point to obtain contact information for everyone you work with. You will be amazed by the connections you make and the support system you develop.
  5. Handle potential problems quickly . discuss any concerns with your field placement advisor as well as your supervisor as soon as they arise, while still maintaining professional courtesy. Keeping communication open is essential. More specific guidelines for handling conflicts in placements can be found in the Student Handbook.
