Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally funded, need-based employment program. Eligible students may earn FWS funds by working part-time (up to 20 total hours a week) with approved on or off-campus FWS employers. Students are awarded FWS based on financial need, availability of FWS funds, and job availability. Employing departments, and the state and federal governments share in the payment of student wages. The Federal Work-Study Program provides valuable experience to students both inside and outside of their field of study. Students are encouraged to work part-time while in school to not only gain work experience but to help contribute to the cost of their education and reduce their loan indebtedness.
All undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time (twelve hours per semester) and accepted into a degree program that show financial need, as defined by the institution on a yearly basis, are eligible for FWS. Students in the Adult Education Program are not eligible. Students must demonstrate financial need as calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and must be citizens of the United States or eligible non-citizens. Additionally, students must be making satisfactory academic progress.
ANY Carthage student that is enrolled at least half-time (6 semester credits) is eligible for campus employment. Nearly every facet of Carthage has some students helping to run it in some capacity. Once on campus, a student can contact any prospective employer for which they are interested in working and apply. This includes professors, departmental offices, security, administration offices, and student activities areas (i.e. Tarble Athletic & Recreation Center).
Campus Employment students are restricted to the policies of student employment. This includes not being allowed to work more than 20 hours a week without prior approval, and no overtime is allowed. Students employed during non-academic times of the year also fall under this program, which includes J-Term and Summer Employment. A monthly check is issued in the Business Office and can be used for payment on the student account balance or for personal living expenses.
The difference between Campus Employment and Federal Work-Study is that the Office of Student Financial Planning does not award Campus Employment. Department budgets are also separated between Federal Work-Study and Campus Employment. Departments are charged 25% for each student that they hire in the FWS program (75% is paid by the Federal Government), and are charged 100% for students employed in the Campus Employment Program.
