About the Annual Fund

Through the Carthage Annual Fund, alumni, parents and friends of the College unite to support the College's vision. Their investments yield a stronger college and talented graduates that begin to shape the world when they enter the workforce.

Annual Fund contributions have assisted in the transformation of the Physical Education Center in the Tarble Arena - a 2,500 seat sport and performance center. Your contribution may help with other initiatives, such as building the endowment to assure adequate availability of financial aid, recruiting superb professors, beautifying the campus, and offering the many special programs that distinguish Carthage as a top liberal arts college.

Illuminating mind, ennobling spirit, and invigorating life- such are the aims of Carthage.

Embracing these objectives is made possible in part by the financial support of alumni and friends of the College. "Celebrating Carthage" is a challenge to raise $1 million for each year of the College's existence. Carthage is well on the way to meeting this challenge, thanks to many avenues of support.

As part of the "Celebrating Carthage" challenge, we seek to increase the number of people who give to the annual fund each year. The number of annual donors- those who give gifts small or large every year- is a key measure of the strength of Carthage. It is one of the first numbers foundations examine when determining when determining whether to continue or increase support of the College. This is why a modest gift each year can be much more valuable to the ongoing success of Carthage than one might imagine.

Why do you give back to Carthage?

We give back to Carthage for three reasons. The first is to honor the past and what Carthage meant to us as students. The second is to show appreciation for the present and what Carthage means to us today through college activities and community involvement. The third is to assist in preparing for the future by supporting Carthage's continuing efforts in enabling students to becoming world-wide leaders.

What does it mean to be philanthropic?

Being philanthropic means having the courage to make an investment without expecting any monetary returns or personal accolades. In the case of giving to Carthage that means making a no-risk investment being guaranteed the high returns of creating a well-educated society.

"We give to honor the past and what Carthage meant to us as students."

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Carthage?

During the three years that I have been at Carthage, meeting new people and building relationships has been one of the things I have enjoyed most. Not only have I made great friendships with other students, but being able to have real relationships with my professors has been something I have loved.

How can the gifts of alumni, parents, and friends make a difference in the lives of students?

When looking at colleges I knew right away that I wanted to go to a private college, but my biggest worry was finances. With the scholarships I was awarded, I was able to afford Carthage and receive an outstanding education. These scholarships were funded through generous donations from alumni and friends. I will probably never meet these donors, but I am grateful for their belief in Carthage and me.

What would you say is Carthage's greatest strength?
I would say Carthage's greatest strength is the personal feeling you get here. Carthage has a great reputation for academics and right away you can tell why. The small class sizes make a great learning environment and the professors work so hard to make sure every student has the best chance for success.

What would you say to an alumnus contemplating a gift?
I would tell an alumnus contemplating a gift that it would definitely be worth it. There are so many great students here at Carthage. Alumni gifts help students receive an education that will allow them to give back some day.
