Mr. Martin graduated from Carthage with a double major in business and marketing and now works as a manager of business operations for Surgical Services at Froedtert South in Kenosha. The idea to break a world record was born on the night of his 2010 graduation from Carthage — into one of the toughest job markets in recent memory, due to the Great Recession.

Back then, Mr. Martin and his roommate were brainstorming ways to make their resumes stand out, and he joked that he should try to break a Guinness World Record because “World Record Holder” would look great on a resume. For more than a decade, that idea remained in the back of his head.

When the pandemic hit, Mr. Martin returned to that dream, now with a new goal of inspiring others. He decided to build the word “Together” because it spoke to collective efforts to battle the pandemic and connected to his last year at Carthage when the College introduced its mission statement of “Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together.”

John Robinson ’13, will serve as the official brick counter, and John Voynovich ’10, Carthage’s webcasting producer, will record the event.

The current world record for the largest LEGO brick word is 9,697 bricks and was set earlier this year. Mr. Martin’s word, “Together,” is expected to use 23,621 bricks — which will be red and black, Carthage’s team colors, and in honor of former Carthage athletic director Bob Bonn. “Together” will be 11.5 feet long and take approximately 17-20 hours to build. It is expected to take up to 12 weeks for Guinness World Records to certify this endeavor as the new world record.
