The Carthage Mathematics Department offers coursework in actuarial science. Actuaries apply their knowledge of mathematics, statistics, finance, and business to assess risk, often in the insurance and finance industries. A strong background in mathematics is essential. Actuaries generally have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field and must pass a series of exams.

Students can tailor their choice of courses to their actuarial interests, and a member of the Carthage Mathematics faculty has written questions for the actuarial exams. Students who come to Carthage interested in actuarial work can pass two or more exams by the time they graduate.

Four Carthage courses are approved by the actuarial societies for VEE (Validation by Educational Experience) credit: MTH 3050 Statistics, MGT 3210 Financial Management, ECN 1010 Principles of Microeconomics, and ECN 1020 Principles of Macroeconomics.
