2. Develop your skills through three years of clinical experience.

Students will be challenged to apply what they learn to patient care situations. At Carthage, nursing majors begin clinical work their sophomore year — a year earlier than at most other colleges. Students will care for patients in many different settings — hospitals, homes, schools, and the community.

“My clinical lab has been my favorite. My instructors have tailored the class to work on making sure each student can fix the things they struggle with, not just the average things we all need to work on.”
Benjamin Gabbey ’25

Nursing Learning Laboratories
This 3,000-square-foot space houses a welcome center that provides office space for part-time nursing faculty, a desk for nursing laboratory workers, a debriefing room with a whiteboard and TV monitor, a psychomotor skills laboratory, and a simulation laboratory. The simulation laboratory has four high-fidelity human simulators (adult, child, infant, and birthing mother). The simulation laboratory has video cameras and a video capture system for use during student simulations, which can be displayed in the debriefing room.

Health Assessment Laboratory
Located across the hall from the Nursing Learning Laboratories, this room houses four examination tables, a conference table, a whiteboard, and TV monitor.

“I am a lab assistant in the nursing lab. This has helped me not only get to know more of the nursing students and faculty, but I get to be involved in the simulation side of nursing school as well.”Abigail Wetzel ’24

4. Provide medical care abroad through J-Term study tours.

Led by nursing faculty, Carthage students completed a rewarding first medical mission to Honduras...

Nursing students may choose from a variety of study tours during J-Term. One of the most popular courses for nursing students is the Global Perspectives in Healthcare: Service Learning in Honduras study tour. This course allows students to focus on the community as a whole and identify needs endemic to the people within it. Students provide health promotion activities and treatment of health problems, as well as service opportunities, including service to children, hair washing for children, assistance with medical/dental procedures, distribution of supplies, construction, and spiritual care. Students learn about cultural differences related to health care, family, economics, technology, religion, and other aspects.

“During my J-Term trip to Honduras, we provided medical, dental, lice treatments, and medication to the people in the community. This trip opened my eyes and made me so grateful for everything I have. The people in Honduras were so happy and thankful that we were there and did not stop expressing their gratitude for us and what we were doing for them. This experience showed me that this is what I want to do; I want to help people and care for them to the best of my ability.”Anissa Acevedo ’26

At Carthage, students are encouraged to take courses outside of their major, to pursue new passio...

Carthage recognizes the importance of a supportive and enriching environment for our nursing students. To demonstrate our commitment to their success, we have established a student mentoring program.
