International students make up three percent of Carthage’s student body, representing countries from around the globe including Brazil, Italy, Belgium, Ukraine, Nigeria, Japan, England, and more.

While Carthage is a small school in Wisconsin, many international students come to the College for its location between Milwaukee and Chicago and, of course, the lake view.

“At Carthage, we are always striving for diversity and inclusion. International students offer new perspectives and an insight into life outside Carthage and students’ hometowns,” says Director of Admissions for international students, Mallory Madson ’09. “Working with international students, I see how they are able to thrive in our community environment and better our campus as a whole.”

Seyi Ajibade Seyi Ajibade M.Ed. ’22

Home country: Nigeria
Major: Master of Education and Piano Pedagogy Performance

“Carthage offered me a self-designed major opportunity which left me no choice but to come to this school. I am very thankful to my professors in my program because, even when I think I can’t do it, the faculty give me the support that keeps me going. This program has given me the opportunity to focus on my career after Carthage.”

Alexandre LaCrosse ?22 Alexandre Lacrosse ’22

Home country: Belgium
Major: Athletic Training

“It has always been a dream of mine to play college basketball in the United States. I visited some schools in the area and once I toured Carthage, and once I toured Carthage, I easily visualized the next chapter of my life here. Carthage is home to some of the best sports facilities in Division III, and the small community environment suits the sort of student I am. It was a no-brainer for me after having developed sincere relationships with the faculty, staff, and coaches.”

Ana Carolina Amadeu ’22

Home country: Brazil
Majors: Political Science and Spanish

“I was surprised by the liberal arts education offered at Carthage. We don’t have liberal arts schools in Brazil, so I didn’t even know what that meant before I came to Carthage. But being able to take classes outside of my majors has helped me become a more well-rounded individual. My advice to other international students interested in Carthage is that I know it is scary to leave your home country and come to a place where you don’t know anyone, but as long as you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, your time at Carthage will be the best time of your life.”

Graduate student Yu-Mei Chang Yu-Mai Chang MM ’23

Home country: Taiwan
Major: Master of Music, Vocal Pedagogy and Music Theatre

“I chose Carthage for its very established program of vocal pedagogy in music theater. My professors in the program are very patient, and they always encourage me to learn and grow. The school is beautifully built along the marvelous Lake Michigan where there are many lovely small wild animals that live on the lake. Plus, every person here is friendly.”

Franco Basili Franco Basili MM ’22

Home country: Argentina
Major: Master of Music and Choral Conducting

“I chose Carthage because Professor García-Novelli recommended me to be part of the Target Language Expert (TLE) program here, which allows me to teach courses at Carthage as a earn my master’s degree. The program is fantastic, and I liked the idea of coming to Carthage to improve my English level, get a master’s degree, and learn more about music singing. At Carthage, I found refined scholars, fine musicians, and incredible professors willing to give their students everything.”
