South Africa J-Term Blog #7

We continued our travels toward the Eastern Cape, stopping at the beautiful town of Knysna along the “Garden Route” of Africa.

The harbor there had the most beautiful view, especially at sunset.

Our last full day!

Knysna Heads in South Africa

We spent our time seeing beautiful sights like the Knysna Heads and dreaming about owning a home there one day.

We hiked through the nature reserve, enjoyed lunch in the trees, then returned to the mainland for an evening of our last delicious dinner, a beautiful sunset, and great company.

Monday was a bittersweet day, as our adventure of a lifetime finally came to an end; however, we were all ready to sleep in our own beds.

Sunrise in a plane back to the United States.

We traveled for over 24 hours, with a bus ride to the airport and three flights, to get back to Chicago — at least there was a beautiful sunrise on the airplane!

A huge thank you to Safaris For Africa for planning an incredible trip for us Carthage students, and another thank you to our phenomenal professors Michele Hancock and Jacqueline Easley for the thought-provoking conversations, endless laughs, and an abundance of memories for the past two weeks.

Description
This study abroad trip begins in a rural region of South Africa where our outreach work at Nkume Primary School continues. Students will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the students who attend the school through education, school maintenance projects, and planting new crops in the recently established vegetable garden.

The next part of our adventure takes us on an exhilarating safari experience to search for the Big Five (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo); a moment of solace in the ancient Drakensberg Mountains; and a journey along the Eastern Cape’s iconic Garden Route and complete the experience with a trip at one of South Africa’s most sought-after coastal towns.
