Lakeside Band Festival The Music Department will welcome 50 high school students from the region to play in this year’s Lakeside Band Festival, with the culminating concert taking place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.

The concert will include several Halloween-themed selections, including a narrative of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

The Lakeside Band Festival has brought musical talent from all over the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands. The very first festival featured Larry Combs, who formerly played principal clarinet in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Professor James Ripley is the director of this year’s event and will conduct the Wind Orchestra in the festival concert. The concert will also include a music set to accompany a short video in the graphic novel style depicting a romance between two super-heroes.

Prof. Andrew Boysen, Jr. Prof. Andrew Boysen, Jr. Our guest conductor-composer this year is Professor Andrew Boysen, Jr. from the University of New Hampshire. Multiple selections by Prof. Boysen will be featured in the festival, including his new work for guitar and band: “Tarantula,” based on the Italian dance called a tarantella. Prof. Boysen will conduct the High School Festival Band on three of his own works, “Simple Song,” “Unraveling,” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

In addition, the concert will feature a performance of Maurice Ravel’s enchanting “Mother Goose Suite” set for chamber wind ensemble and played by Carthage’s AMATI group, a subset of players from within the Wind Orchestra.

The concert is free and open to the public. There are no tickets for this event. Watch also from home through our livestream. For more information, please contact the Fine Arts Box Office at 262-551-6661 between noon and 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
