Join the Carthage community for the Winter Philharmonic Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.

The Carthage Philharmonic is a music ensemble that is known for their fellowship, brilliance, and their desire for growth. They have performed works by many composers, including Beethoven, Bach, Copland, Walker, and Mozart. They are heavily involved in many events on campus, including the Christmas Festival and Family Weekends. The orchestra is conducted by Professor Etsushi Kawakami, director of orchestral activities. Prof. Kawakami has worked side-by-side with Pulitzer-prize winner Ellen Twillich and Grammy winner and violinist Mark O’Connor.

The orchestra will perform a piece by Deanna Wehrspann that was written and inspired by Ashley Ballou-Bennoma, a musician, teacher, and a voice that brings attention to cystic fibrosis. Additionally, they will perform a lesser-known work by Marianna von Martines. Von Martines was a contemporary of Mozart and studied piano and composition with Haydn, who lived upstairs from Martines. There were not many female composers active during that time period, however, a recent surge of interest in her works have led to newly published editions. The concert will also include the CPE Bach cello concerto in A minor and will feature our Adjunct Cello Professor Peter Thomas.

Prof. Thomas has been a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and has performed around the world as a soloist, educator, and chamber musician. Prof. Thomas frequently performs with the 414 Quartet, Present Music, Carthage Trio, and multiple other bands.

The concert is free and open to the public. Watch also from home through our livestream.
