Carthage invites all members of the community to a business luncheon featuring guest speaker Susan Crawford, an expert in climate adaptation and technological infrastructure who served as a special assistant to U.S. President Barack Obama for science, technology, and innovation.

Many experts say Wisconsin is positioned as a future climate haven where people and industries from areas of the country hard-hit by climate change could relocate. Ms. Crawford will discuss the implications for our electrical and data grids.

Titled “Beacon of Stability: Preparing Wisconsin’s Grid for Growth,” the event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Todd Wehr Center Jockey Rooms. Admission is free, but advance registration is required.

Ms. Crawford, a clinical professor at Harvard Law School, teaches courses about climate adaptation, cities, public leadership, technology, and communications policy. She’s also a prolific author whose newest book, “Charleston: Race, Water, and the Coming Storm,” tells the story of an American city that suddenly stands at the intersection of climate and race.

This is the first event on the Carthage Business and Professional Coalition’s 2024-25 schedule. Guided by a steering committee of civic and business leaders from across the region, the group has convened on campus for decades to exchange ideas that support the region’s economy. Throughout the upcoming academic year, the coalition’s speakers will explore several ways Wisconsin is preparing for growth.

Later this fall and into the new year, experts will share new perspectives on artificial intelligence and the coming housing crisis:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 12: AI and Cybersecurity Panel
  • Thursday, Feb. 27: Equity and Property Development
