The psychology major is designed to encourage an understanding of human behavior from a broad perspective, to prepare students for graduate study in psychology, for employment in a psychology-related field, or for further education or career training in a variety of other fields.

Carthage offers both a major and minor in psychology. To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Carthage, students must complete the Carthage Core, Distribution Requirements, and the psychology major requirements listed below

Students pursuing the psychology major must complete 44 credits.

Required Courses — Take All
  • PYC 1500 Introduction to Psychological Science (4 credits)*
  • PYC 2010 Research Methods and Statistics I (4 credits) *
  • PYC 3010 Research Methods and Statistics II (4 credits) *
  • PYC 4700 Fieldwork in Psychological Science OR PYC 4800 Thesis in Psychological Science (4 credits)

* Minimum grade of C- required.

Students will be assigned to PYC 4990 Senior Thesis Completion at the time they are completing their Senior Thesis requirement.

Breadth Courses — Take Four (16 credits)

  • PYC 2150 Sensation and Perception (4 credits)
  • PYC 2200 Social Psychology (4 credits)
  • PYC 2300 Cognitive Psychology (4 credits)

Depth Courses — Take Two (8 credits)

Majors also are required to take two depth courses (3000 or higher) after they have met the prerequisites for the respective depth course. These depth courses include:

  • PYC 3500 Abnormal Psychology (4 credits)
  • PYC 3600 Organizational Psychology (4 credits)
  • PYC 3650 Childhood Psychopathology (4 credits)
  • PYC 3750 Psychology of Personality (4 credits)
  • PYC 3850 Adult Development and Aging (4 credits)
  • NEU 3950 Neuroscience II: Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience (4 credits)
  • PYC 4010 Psychology of Stress (4 credits)
  • PYC 4150 Globalization and Psychology (4 credits)
  • PYC 400T Advanced Topics in Psychological Science (4 credits)

Finally, students need to take one elective course labeled as PYC (which can include PYC 200T: Topics in Psychological Science).

Three courses are required (no substitutions) of all psychology minors.

In addition, students must choose three additional courses (12 credits) from the listings in the department.

Enrolling in Thesis in Psychological Science, Fieldwork in Psychological Science, or independent study requires permission of the department chair.

Honors in the major is attained by an exemplary experimental thesis completed in PYC 4700 or 4800 and a public presentation. Basic requirements are listed under All-College Programs in the catalog.
