The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing all activities involving animals at Carthage College.

As mandated by federal law, the committee reviews and oversees all teaching and research activities involving animals, to determine that these activities meet ethical standards for humane animal care and use, in accordance with the standards set by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare through the National Institutes of Health.

The IACUC ensures the humane care of animals through semi-annual inspections of animal housing and research facilities, review of all animal care programs and animal usage protocols, and the investigation of any complaints made regarding animal use. In accordance with federal law, the IACUC consists of at least five members: several Carthage College faculty including two research scientists, one non-scientist, a veterinarian, and a representative from the local community who is not affiliated with the College.
