Engineer of Ascent Milwaukee to visit Carthage Oct. 5

The Business and Professional Coalition is thrilled to announce its 2023-24 luncheon series, which will lean into crucial questions about smart and sustainable urban economic development.

Our first event, “Building for the Future: Ascent Milwaukee,” takes place Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Todd Wehr Center Jockey Rooms. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and the program begins at noon. Attendance is free, but registration is required.

About the speaker

Jordan Komp Guest speaker Jordan Komp is the associate principal and Milwaukee office director of Thornton Tomasetti, a world-renowned structural design, engineering, and materials analysis firm that is responsible for six of the world’s 15 tallest buildings, among other innovative and technologically advanced projects across five continents. As project manager and mass timber special inspector for Ascent Milwaukee, currently the world’s tallest mass timber frame structure, Mr. Komp was responsible for overseeing the procurement and safe erection of the building’s signature material, cross-laminated timber slabs, beams, and columns. He was also responsible for supervising the extensive fire-testing and engineering analysis utilized to prove that the timber structure would exceed code required fire ratings.

Joining Mr. Komp for a fireside chat is Kathryn Hasz, Carthage assistant professor of engineering and a materials scientist who studies nanoscale surface forces and friction. They will discuss the engineering challenges of the Ascent project and the future of sustainable materials in urban design and development.

During his visit to campus, Mr. Komp will visit the new engineering space in Lentz Hall and meet with Carthage engineering students. Robert Nagel, director of engineering, says, “It is exciting for Carthage College to host Jordan Komp! Jordan’s visit will give Carthage students an opportunity to learn about building technologies at the forefront of structural engineering.” Carthage’s B.S. in Engineering prepares students for a wide range of careers and further study, including the civil and structural engineering at work in projects like the Ascent Tower.

For nearly 30 years, the Business and Professional Coalition — a network of regional civic, business, and professional leaders — have met regularly at Carthage to engage in substantive discussion around topics of regional and national import, and conversations that aim to further the region’s economic growth and prosperity. Through programming that includes prominent guest speakers and panel events, the BPC promotes learning, conversation, and relationship building to strengthen our local business community.
