On Feb. 27, students in the Visual Communication class at Carthage experienced a unique and engaging learning session led by alumnus Rich Smith ’09, the current director of the 6th Street Theatre and Over Our Head Players.
Mr. Smith, a theatre major during his time at Carthage, shared his expertise through an interactive lesson that challenged students to explore the multifaceted nature of communication.
The highlight of the session involved students learning to express themselves by portraying one activity through their actions while verbalizing another. This exercise not only entertained, but also enlightened students on the complexities and nuances of effective communication.
Mr. Smith’s session exemplified the practical application of improv and verbal communication skills, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and creativity. Students left the class with a broader understanding of communication, equipped with new skills to enhance their personal and professional interactions.
This special guest lecture not only enriched the curriculum of the Visual Communication class, but also underscored the valuable connections between Carthage’s alumni and its current students. Mr. Smith’s return to campus as a guest speaker bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, providing a learning experience that will undoubtedly influence the students’ approach to communication in their future endeavors.
