Learn more about the history of the banjo and black folk music during a live discussion with author Kristina Gaddy from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Band Room, H. F. Johnson Center For Fine Arts (JAC) 142.

Rhiannon Giddens, renowned two-time Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist, recently payed the banjo on Beyoncé’s “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” song. Because of this, the publishing company W. W. Norton is hosting a talk about the history of the banjo and Black folk music in the Americas with Kristina Gaddy, author of “Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo’s Hidden History.”

Education majors might find this discussion particularly informative as this is a part of American history that will directly inform your future culturally responsive classroom.
