Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage for three reasons. My mother works here, so I get to attend at no cost! The professors I met before attending Carthage were so amazing. And the campus is beautiful. I knew the College would be a great fit for me.”

Faculty mentors

“I wouldn’t have my current intern position at Uline without Professor Erlan Wheeler and Professor Mark Snavely supporting my transition from actuarial science to data science. Prof. Snavely is my faculty advisor and was one of the references I used when applying for my internship.

“All of the mathematics and data science professors I’ve encountered are outstanding individuals and will bend over backwards to help you get the results you want from your education.”

Favorite class

“Data Science II is my favorite class. It expanded on Data Science I, so I was already comfortable with the coding language (RStudio). Also, I got to do a project in that class analyzing whether giving away free LA Dodgers bobbleheads was a useful promotion or not for drawing in crowds. That was a very enjoyable project and the one I will remember the most.”

Toughest class

“Abstract Algebra is an upper-level mathematics course that requires some serious critical thinking skills and collaboration. It was a tough class but also one of my favorites because I do love a challenge and got to meet a lot of awesome people along the way, including the Professor Sara Jensen.”

Golden opportunities

“I participated in the research of a statistics paper that was published and won two awards at a national conference. I also served in two data science ambassador roles for the Math/Science Scholarship Competition. As an ambassador, I talked to incoming students and their families about myself and my majors.”

Internships or campus employment

“My sophomore year (2021), I was a data scientist intern. This was a great experience, and I gained a lot of knowledge in my field of study. I even made a sales forecasting predictive model that was used as a tool for seeing what and what not to buy for that business.

“I am currently a data analyst intern at the Uline corporate office in Pleasant Prairie, Wis. This internship began in February 2022 and will lead into summer 2022. I will then become a full-time employee.”

Career goal

“I’m hoping to get a position at Uline as a full-time corporate analyst.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spots are the Christine A. Hobbs Outdoor Learning Classroom and the shoreline behind the Kissing Rock.”

Biggest surprise

“I’m surprised I switched from wanting to be an actuarial scientist to a data analyst.”

Advice for other students in your major?

“Data science has so many career options. There is a high demand for data analysts, data scientists, and data engineers in our country. As long as you get good grades and apply yourself, you’ll get a good job after college. Plus, the courses are extremely laid back and fun, which is why I changed my major to data science my sophomore year.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“He would be impressed because I was never an overachieving kid. In fact, I was kind of a troublemaker. College was a wake-up call for me because its so important for my career path. 8-year-old me would also love what I’m doing because I’ve always loved math.”
