Ms. Pournik’s professors at Carthage helped prepare her for her current position as a business development professional at Strand Associates, Inc.

“I enjoy the variety of tasks that come my way. I also enjoy working at our headquarters because I get to meet many people and help funnel information to all of our offices.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“It’s challenging for me because a lot of what I do is break down technical engineering terminology into terms that the everyday person can understand and value, but I enjoy the challenge.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“The entire Economics Department supported me throughout my journey at Carthage. It was Professor Yuri Maltsev who first sparked my interest in economics when I traveled with him to South Africa for my freshman year J-Term study tour. I learned so much on that trip and fell in love with economics instantly.

“Professor Cassie Lau assisted me by finding opportunities for me to learn about different facets of economics — The Federal Reserve Bank and Real Estate, for example. She also helped me tackle my thesis.

“Last, but definitely not least, Professor Julio Rivera was my rock through college. He gave me the confidence and guidance I needed. He pushed me to dig deeper, rather than spoon-feeding me answers, and to not be afraid to ask questions. The best thing about Prof. Rivera was that he made time for you. He would always have his door open and would welcome anyone into his office. He also helped me search for jobs, and ultimately helped me get to know Strand Associates, Inc.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“The diverse liberal arts education helped me appreciate different ways of thinking, allowing me to understand others and their approach to situations, which is vital when working with others to make a cohesive team.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Some of my favorite memories at Carthage were my J-Term study tours, Habitat for Humanity spring break trips, Chi Omega, and my professors and classmates. Carthage helped me find my balance and create a strong foundation that would support me even after my four years.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

Reach out to your professors! They are humans just like you. Find someone you have a connection with, even a small one, and really harness it. They love to watch you succeed and have lots of wisdom to share.

“Also, get to know your classmates, especially those in your major. They will be with you through thick and thin, and, of course, thesis!”
