Raven Dockery graduated in 2020 with a master’s degree in music vocal pedagogy for music theatre singing. Ms. Dockery lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she works as an actress and vocal instructor, as well as a hairstylist and makeup artist.
During her time at Carthage, Ms. Dockery was the recipient of a Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant, one of Carthage’s Wisconsin Program scholarships, which allowed her to rigorously study music while being a teacher’s assistant and assist in the audition process for Carthage’s Fine Arts department.
Ms. Dockery credits her professors for her success in reaching her professional and personal goals.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“I love that it’s so broad and so specific at times. My career is never just one thing because I have many interests and the two different professional worlds that I am in offer a lot of flexibility to mix the two together.”
How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?
“It helped me when I was teaching my first workshop that I created with my master’s degree. It was such a wonderful experience when the students I was teaching actually understood the material. It was as if my education came full circle.”
Why did you choose Carthage?
“Professor Corinne Ness had reached out to me and I felt like it was the right time and right program for me.”
What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?
“I got to T.A. my first college course in the fall of 2020, and I got to work with other professors to help with the audition process for the fine arts department.”
What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?
“Prof. Ness played a huge part in my success. She was the main reason I came to this program, and she has helped tremendously throughout the program and continues to help me after I graduated. I have so much appreciation for her.”
What role have the values in Carthage's mission, "Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together" played in your life?
“’Seeking truth’ means getting your education and getting the most out of your time at Carthage. ‘Building strength’ is the faculty members who continue to push you past your limits to make you a better person. ‘Inspiring service’ is being able to work within your field and give back to the Carthage/Kenosha community and inspiring other students that they too can succeed.”
What's your favorite Carthage memory?
“Recently I got to partake in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on campus. And being an African American woman, it was wonderful to see the amount of support for the African American community Carthage continues to give. It truly warmed my spirit.”
Tips for current Carthage students?
“The amount of work you put in will make your experience all that much better. Just give it your all because if there is one thing nobody can take away from you, it is your education.”
