As the first in her family to attend a four-year college, graduating from Carthage was a huge accomplishment for Antanasia Yancey ’22, M.Ed ’24. She is now a special education teacher at Mitchell Community School. She is currently working toward a Master of Education.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“As a first-year teacher, I’ve enjoyed seeing the growth of my students and knowing that I am making a difference in their lives, whether that is personally or educationally. I’ve enjoyed all of the connections that I have made and value them dearly. My colleagues have been so helpful on this journey and make every day worthwhile.”
How did Carthage prepare you?
“Many of the courses I took in undergrad have really shaped my view of what schools are like now. I was able to complete field hours in many different schools around Racine and Kenosha.”
What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?
“I was able to start my career right after graduation, as well as further my education.”
What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?
“Professors Siovahn Williams and Katherine Hilson have played the biggest part in my success. These ladies have inspired, motivated, and continue to push me to keep going. Not only were they my professors, but I also see them as mentors. Prof. Hilson took the time to get to know me on a personal level on day one of her Intro to Sociology class. I will never forget that she was a listening ear when I needed one and always supported me.
“I will also forever be grateful to Prof. Williams for always looking out for me. She inspired and motivated me to join the ACT Program and pursue my career in education.”
What role have the values in Carthage's mission, "Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together" played in your life?
“Carthage’s mission has shaped my life by allowing me to figure out who I am as a person, improve on my weaknesses, and give back to the community in any way I can.”
Tips for current Carthage students?
“It may get hard, tough, or challenging, but no matter what, keep going. It may not seem worth it now, but it’ll be more than worth it once you walk across that stage. Go out and explore! Try new things and meet new people! Networking is the key! And most importantly, have fun!”
