Prof. David Brownholland teaches organic and general chemistry. He came to Carthage from Centenary College of Louisiana, where he was an assistant professor of chemistry from 2010 to 2014.

Prof. Brownholland earned his Ph.D. at Purdue University by utilizing organic chemistry to work in a multidisciplinary project toward the development of a biosensor for an integral membrane protein target believed to be important for cancer therapy. He also spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher synthesizing and investigating the effects of oxygenated steroids on cardiovascular disease at the medical school at Washington University in St. Louis.

Prof. Brownholland is investigating the design and synthesis of new lipids and surfactants for various applications including drug delivery and new synthetic methodologies in green chemistry. He is also interested in developing discovery-based organic chemistry experiments for the undergraduate curriculum. Students working with Prof. Brownholland will spend most of their time synthesizing organic compounds and will learn air-free organic synthesis, purification methods, and 1H NMR spectroscopy.
