    Professor Bruning received his bachelor’s in political science from Gustavus Adolphus College, master’s in American culture studies from Bowling Green State University, and Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Kansas. In addition to teaching, Prof. Bruning previously worked in television news and sports, both as a producer and production assistant, and he is currently a contributing editor at Soccer Stadium Digest. He is the area chair for sports for the national Popular Culture Association, and the faculty mentor and play-by-play announcer for the Carthage women’s soccer team.

    Prof. Bruning’s research and teaching interests include sports media, film studies, digital technology, political and intercultural communication. He has led over a dozen J-Term study tours to Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, and England, as well as the Oxford University semester abroad. He joined the Carthage faculty in 1999, and is a faculty advisor to the Carthage chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society.
