Shiqi Xu ?20 Shiqi Xu ’20, a piano performance major who has left her musical mark on campus over the last four years, has been accepted to study with one of the most sought-after piano teachers in the world beginning in the fall.

In addition to other prominent piano programs, Shiqi was accepted into the Master of Music in piano performance program at the Manhattan School of Music, studying with the renowned Solomon Mikowsky.

Dr. Mikowsky maintains a selective studio, and he has a long and impressive list of former students who are prominent teachers around the world — teaching at such institutions as the Manhattan School of Music, the Beijing Central Conservatory, the London Royal School of Music, and the Moscow Conservatory. His past students are also winners of top prizes in major international piano competitions — including the Van Cliburne, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, and Queen Elizabeth competitions. And some have been the foremost pianists of the day — including Krill Gerstein and Simone Dinnerstein, who also accepted Shiqi in her studio at the Mannes School of Music.

In addition to having the honor of being one of the handful of students that Dr. Mikowsky accepted, Shiqi was also accepted at and offered generous scholarships by Peabody Conservatory, the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and the Mannes School of Music.

A student of Professor Wael Farouk, Shiqi won the annual concerto competition while still a freshman and performed Chopin’s second piano concerto with the Carthage Philharmonic. She collaborated in a chamber duo with violinist Mary Kelly Hutchinson ’19, who performed Brahms’ Sonatensatz in the finale concert of the monumental Brahms Project. Shiqi also collaborated as an accompanist in numerous musical performances on campus and taught young pianists from the community in the Carthage Arts Academy. She will graduate this spring with honors.
