‘Islamic Architecture of Grief: Foundations of Faith’ TODAY

The Carthage community is invited to attend “Islamic Architecture of Grief: Foundations of Faith” with Fr. Michael Calabria (St. Bonaventure University) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Campbell Student Union Auditorium.

Suleyman I and Shah Jahan represent the “Golden Age” of the Ottoman and Mughal Empires. Yet, both sovereigns experienced tremendous personal loss in the premature death of loved ones. Both monarchs expressed their grief by erecting monumental funerary complexes, each inscribed with sacred texts reflecting their faith in the midst of grief. 

In this program, Fr. Calabria will document the inscriptional programs of the Șehzade Mehmet Mosque-Mausoleum (Istanbul, Turkey) and the Taj Mahal (Agra, India) and what these structures continue to proclaim to the post-modern world.
