Carthage presents the art exhibit: “A Place All One’s Own,” featuring collaborative and individual works by artists Ellie Richards and Eleanor Anderson.

Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30. And join us also for an artist talk with Ms. Richards and Ms. Anderson at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. Both events take place in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

Ellie Richards, a furniture designer and sculptor based out of Penland, NC, builds from the traditions of woodworking and the readymade, to create connections between people and their sense of place. She is a furniture designer and sculptor. Interested in the role of furniture and domestic objects and the connections between people, Ms. Richards transforms the furniture she creates into art, assembling wide-ranging objects that explore links between community, culture, labor, and leisure. Her works have been featured in various exhibitions across the United States, including the Mint Museum; Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design; SOFA Chicago; and the Society of Contemporary Craft.

Eleanor Anderson is a textile artist whose work plays with craft traditions through the use of bright colors, repetitive patterns, and subversion of traditional materials and techniques. Ms. Anderson’s practice seeks to alleviate daily doldrums and spiritless ways of living, subverting objects and spaces into pleasure-seeking experiences. Her works have been featured in various exhibitions across the United States, including Tennessee Tech University, Artworks Center for Contemporary Art, Penland, and the Praxis Fiber Studio.

“A Place All One’s Own” is on display now through Friday, April 21, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Extended hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. All art exhibits are free and open to the public.
