Carthage offers a major and minor in geoscience. To earn a Bachelor of Arts from Carthage, students must complete the Carthage Core, Distribution Requirements, and the major requirements listed below.

The geoscience major consists of 40 credits. The core consists of 16 credits and is required of all students. Completion of the senior thesis is also required.

  • GEO 1210 Internet Mapping with Web GIS (4 credits) OR GEO 1610 Introduction to Geographic Information Science: Mapping Your World (4 credits)
  • GEO 1600 Earth Revealed (4 credits)
  • GEO 3900 Methods of Field Research (4 credits)
  • GEO 4000 Senior Seminar in Geospatial Science (4 credits)

All students must select two 1000- or 2000-level geoscience courses (8 credits) from the following:

  • GEO 1700 Natural Disasters (4 credits)
  • GEO 1800 Great Lakes Basin (4 credits)
  • GEO 1900 Geology of National Parks (4 credits)
  • GEO 2450 Biogeography (4 credits)
  • GEO 2550 Meteorology (4 credits)
  • GEO 2950 Geomorphology (4 credits)

All students must select two 3000-level geoscience courses (8 credits) from the following:

  • GEO 3200 Hydrology (4 credits)
  • GEO 3400 Forest Ecology (4 credits)
  • GEO 3700 Climatology (4 credits)
  • GEO 3800 Soil Science (4 credits)

In addition, all students must select two courses (8 credits) in research techniques in Geospatial Science from the following:

  • GEO 1770 Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones) in Geosciences (4 credits)
  • GEO 2610 Advanced Geographic Information Science and Analytical Cartography (4 credits)
  • GEO 2700 Satellite Image and Air Photo Analysis (4 credits)
  • GEO 3610 Applied Projects in Geographic Information Science (4 credits)
The geoscience minor consists of 24 credits.
