?The Speakeasy: A Musical Cabaret? Graphic
All Stories

Read about “The Speakeasy” from student writer Elsie Berg ’24.

What is a cabaret? No, it’s not only the name of a musical with catchy tunes. A cabaret is a distinctive style of performance characterized by a casual atmosphere and an entertaining performance given to a dining or nightclub audience. And “The Speakeasy” is set to be the perfect example of this genre of performance, bringing us a range of jazzy performances including solos from the musical theatre canon and hits such as “Big Spender” or, this writer’s personal favorite, “Cell Block Tango.”

Both of these classic hits and more in “The Speakeasy,” a cabaret directed by Ben Woods, choreographed by D.D. Wells, and under the vocal coaching of Professor Corinne Ness. Carthage’s international musical theatre graduate students invite everyone to experience this jazzy performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the H. F. Johnson Recital Hall!

This event is free and open to the public.
