Prof. Jon Bruning Prof. Jon Bruning Jon Bruning, associate professor of communication and digital media, will give a presentation titled “Manchester, City United: Scaling Corporate Social Responsibility in English Club Football” at the 2024 Popular Culture Association national conference in Chicago at the end of March.

The presentation explores how three Manchester football clubs — Manchester City, Manchester United, and Salford City — are engaging in various aspects of social responsibility work in Manchester and beyond. The presentation argues that each club is scaling their CSR work to their club size and profile — City working on sustainability, United working with people with disabilities, and Salford City providing local community employment and education programs.

The presentation is a product of Prof. Bruning’s 2023 sabbatical in Manchester, England. He is the area chair for sports scholarship for the national Popular Culture Association, promoting and mentoring research on sports topics from around the country. At Carthage, he teaches both undergraduate and master’s courses in sports media, marketing, and public relations.
