After receiving bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and business administration at Carthage, Krystle Turner ’07 returned to obtain her special education endorsement. In 2021, she earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Management from Capella University.
While at Carthage, Ms. Turner was able to hone her Spanish-speaking skills by studying abroad in Costa Rica, and she made many friendships with her sorority sisters, whom she still stays in contact with today.
Ms. Turner is now a MTSS coordinator at Beacon Academy of Nevada, where she serves at-risk kids. Her duties include managing student data and monitoring academic performance, progress, and attendance. In addition, she coaches instructional staff on interventions and supports for students.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“I enjoy being able to make an impact and difference in the lives of students from ages 4-21 years of age. I am now in a position in which I’m able to transfer my knowledge and experiences to new and veteran staff within the educational field. My goal is to make a positive first impression on every student I meet because you never get a second chance to make a first impression.”
How did Carthage prepare you?
“I was able to immerse myself in another culture by studying abroad and learning to speak Spanish fluently. The experience had a huge impact on my current career/position. I am able to communicate fluently to Spanish-speaking students and their families on a daily basis.
“Another Carthage experience that I am grateful for was being able to join Sigma Omega Sigma. The sorority gave me the opportunity to become more outgoing, gain support when needed, share mutual interests/experiences, and gain best friends and sistas for life. I carry those friendships with me, and I am thankful and appreciative for the opportunity and know that there was a reason we crossed paths.”
Why did you choose Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because my mother attended the College, and the location made it possible for me to commute from home for the first three years that I attended.”
What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?
“I later went back to Carthage to obtain my special education endorsement, which led me to several opportunities for additional teaching positions within the Racine Unified School District.”
What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?
“Professor Eric Kulke played a huge role in my success as my former Spanish professor. He opened my eyes up to the possibilities of studying abroad. Because of his advice, knowledge, and positive feedback, I was able to spend three months in Costa Rica.”
What's your favorite Carthage memory?
“Getting more involved within Carthage clubs and pledging for Sigma Omega Sigma. Joining clubs and a sorority allowed me to get out of my shell, learn more about others, work with diverse groups of people, build community, and have a voice.”
