HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
Engineering majors take on “real world” projects with local industry, nonprofit, and governmental partners. Carthage also has an established in-house program that develops engineering payloads for zero-gravity, with multiple NASA-funded projects.
SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, or SURE, offers Carthage students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a professor during the summer doing real research work. Students receive a stipend, room and board on campus, and a small research budget.
J-TERM
January Term, or J-Term, is a month-long period of study in January in which all academic departments offer innovative courses on campus, as well as study tours in other countries. While many students use J-Term to fill an academic requirement, others gain valuable global experience by traveling abroad.
ENGINEERING AMBASSADORS
Engineering Ambassadors is network of colleges and universities that form a professional development organization with a mission centered on outreach. Carthage, as a member of the Engineering Ambassadors network, provides students who engage as Engineering Ambassadors access to the skills and experiences necessary to develop as community leaders. Our students engage in community outreach focused on bringing STEM opportunities to K-12 youths in the broader Kenosha/Racine communities.
COLLEGIATE LAUNCH INITIATIVES
Carthage students compete on cross-disciplinary teams participating in rocketry competitions including the Annual Collegiate Rocket Launch Design Competition and the First Nations Launch Rocket Competition. Competitions require teams to design, construct, and fly a high-powered, single-stage rocket recoverable following apogee. Students conduct competition-specific missions, present design and analysis work orally and as written reports, and assess rocket performance based on predictive modeling.
MAKING MENTORS
Making mentors are student leaders in the Carthage Makerspace. These experienced makerspace users work directly with lab manager, Bennett Cook, as they guide and teach their peers on safe machine operation. Making mentors strive to keep our makerspace open and welcoming to educational communities. Our makerspace is where all Carthage students are able learn to become creators.
