Carthage College has long been committed to the residential nature of a college education and along with that, the safety and security of every student. Every hall has dedicated staff that is responsible for developing a positive, responsible and responsive community so that each resident has the opportunity to develop academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Each of the residence halls has at least one live-in staff member who can assist a student who needs help and most of the halls have many staff members to choose from. Each student has their own Resident Assistant, a student staff member who receives approximately a week and half of training to learn how to best help students, whether they need help with using the laundry machine or something much more serious. In addition, each hall also has a Senior Resident Assistant, who is a student staff member who has served at least one full year as a Resident Assistant. These students have also received training on how to assist students, and one is on call each weeknight to respond to student concerns.

Each hall also has a professional, live in staff member (i.e. Assistant Director, Area Coordinator, Hall Director). Our live-in professional staff members have either a master’s or bachelor’s degree and receive extensive training on how to best assist our students. There is a professional staff member on call during the week for crisis and emergency response purposes.

In addition to the Office of Residential Life staff, the Office of Public Safety operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Public safety responds to medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, reports of theft, lost and found property, and other service requests concerning safety and security of our campus community. Public safety officers are trained and certified in first aid, CPR, and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators. The ultimate goal of the Public Safety Department is to promote a safe environment in which our community members can live and learn during their tenure at Carthage.
