The following rules and guidelines pertain to all local and national Greek chapters. These rules and policy guidelines are subject to change at the discretion of the Office of Student Life.

Each chapter is expected to contribute to the campus community in a positive way and present themselves in an appropriate manner in accordance with these guidelines. If Greek chapters have questions or concerns about any of the following guidelines, they should contact the Director of Student Activities or Dean of Students for clarification.

Decorating

Decoration of corridors must be done in compliance with fire safety regulations and are subject to the approval of the Office of Student Life. Only composites will be allowed to be hung in the corridors. For Greek organizations to paint a floor, the organization must comprise a minimum of 51% of the floor population. Approval for painting, and exceptions to the above policy, will be granted at the sole discretion of the Office of Student Life.

Eligibility to Hold Office

Any member of the organization wishing to hold elected or appointed office within the organization must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA at the beginning of the semester assuming the duties of the position.

Greek Organization Guidelines

Any activity held in any campus building should occur with the consideration of all members of the community in mind without violating any College, local, state or federal regulations.

Membership

To be eligible for membership in a Greek letter organization at Carthage College, an individual must be a registered as a full time undergraduate student with at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA in at least their second semester of college. Students who have accepted an invitation to join a Greek organization, must maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA to be eligible for initiation into that organization. If a student fails to maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA, the student may face a probationary period or disciplinary actions within the individual Greek chapter. The student may also face appropriate actions according to the Carthage College Academic Standards policy.

Kick Lines/Serenades

Any group or individual singing or performing kick lines can only do so between the hours of 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM and are limited to outdoor areas.

Lounges

All residence hall lounges are intended for use by all members of the corridor and should not be monopolized by any organization. Organizations wishing to use lounge spaces must receive prior approval from the Hall Director of that building.

Recruitment

All students wishing to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment activities must attain a 2.00 cumulative GPA at the time the student wishes to participate in recruitment, and be enrolled as a full-time Carthage student during the recruitment period. First semester freshmen are ineligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment. Transfer students may be eligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment if they have been accepted to Carthage in good academic standing based on the requirement of the Registrar.

All Greek organizations are expected to participate in recruitment and follow established recruitment guidelines. Greek organizations found to have members who are neither recognized by the College nor meet the above requirements for membership in a Greek organization will be subject to disciplinary action. Disciplinary action may include, but is not limited to, loss of campus privileges, probationary status or suspension from the College.

IFC/Panhellenic

A core component of Greek Life for individual fraternities and sororities is active participation within the Carthage Greek community. Toward this end, all chapters are required to maintain active membership in their respective governance organization. Fraternities and sororities that fail to meet this expectation face penalties outlined within the IFC or Panhellenic constitutions, and/or determined by the Office of Student Life.
